SAFER TRAVEL

For some students, this will be the first time they have to travel on their own. This can be particularly scary if it is a new route to you or you will have to get public transport. After a few weeks you will be a pro at getting to and from school but here are a few things you can do to get yourself prepared and to keep yourself safe:

TIPS FOR TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL:

  • Plan your journey in advance as much as possible. The best way to do this is to have a few practice journeys (ideally at the times you plan on going to/come home from school so you have a clear idea about traffic and timings).

  • Keep bags closed and close to you and keep valuables like mobile phones, cash and jewellery out of sight.

  • If travelling on public transport, always try to wait for your bus/tram/train in a well lit place.

  • Have your ticket, pass or change ready in your hand so your purse or wallet is out of sight.

  • If you are being picked up and dropped off to school, organise beforehand a safe meeting place. The school gate is likely not to be a good idea as this area can be really busy and could put other students at risk.

  • If you feel concerned about your safety get to somewhere that is safe. If you are walking go to the nearest shop or to an area where there are more people. If on the bus, sit close to the driver. If you are on the tram or train, move to a carriage where there are other people.

  • You will make loads of new friends in your secondary school and it is likely you will meet someone who lives by you. Why not plan to meet up when travelling? It’s a great way to get to know new friends!

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR MOBILE PHONE SAFE WHEN TRAVELLING:

We understand that a having a mobile phone can be an important tool to keeping yourself safe and in contact with your family. If you plan to bring your mobile phone with you, here are some important tips you must know:

  • Avoid displaying your phone in public wherever possible. Set your phone to vibrate if possible to attract less attention, and never leave it lying around

  • Try not to walk and talk, but if you have to, keep aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you.

  • Record the model, phone number and PIN number details, and keep them somewhere safe.

  • Always use the phone’s security lock or PIN number.

  • Register the phone with http://www.immobilise.com. If the phone is reported stolen the SIM card can be blocked.
