ON YOUR FIRST DAY

On your first day of school at Archbishop Ilsley you will get straight into secondary school life and get to meet new friends right away! Here is all you need to know about your first day.

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS

You will need to make sure that you have yourself ready! Make sure that you have the correct uniform and the equipment you will need. To make sure you are prepared it is a good idea to have all of this sorted and laid out ready for the morning the day before. To know what uniform and equipment you need please check out our school website here>>> or click here to get our first day check list!

GETTING TO SCHOOL

As it is your first day you certainly do not want to be caught out by traffic and risk being late on your first day. However you plan to get to school do a couple of test runs at the time you will need to travel to get a better idea of how long the journey will take you. Remember that if you did these practice runs during the summer holiday traffic is likely to be busier than usual so make sure you leave earlier than you normally did on those test runs.

You might want to meet up with friends from your primary school and come into school together. If you do this make sure that you arrange a time and safe place to meet them at least the night before.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

When you arrive at school there will be some friendly teachers to greet you on the front gate. If someone has brought you to school this is where you will say goodbye. They will not be allowed to walk into the school with you.

Once in the school teachers and other students will guide you to the main hall where you will meet with all of the other new year 7 students and have a short assembly. During this assembly you will have the opportunity to meet your Head Teacher and the Head of Houses again (remember you will also meet these people during your transition day in June/July). From here you will be taken to your tutor group by students who are also in your tutor group.

MEETING YOUR FORM GROUP

You will have just under an hour with your tutor group. You will get to meet your form tutors and other students in your tutor group (if you haven't already met them on transition day).

You will also be given your school planner and given information out your timetable. You will find out what lessons you have. You will find out when, where and who your teachers are. Don't worry if most of this doesn’t make sense at the time, it soon will.

GOING TO LESSONS

After that first hour of the day you will go to your first lesson (don't worry, there will be plenty of people on hand to help you get to your classes).

After first lesson, you will go back to your tutor group as this is now tutor time and then on to break like any normal day. Again don't worry; there are plenty of people about who will help you find your way during break times too.

After that, you go to your next lesson which is period 3 and then onto period 4. Half way through period 4 you will have your lunch break. You will have a little extra time than normal for lunch on your first day.

After lunch you go back to your class from period 4, then onto period 5 and then end the day at 3.10.

GOING TO BREAK AND LUNCH

At break and lunch time you will be showed where the canteen and picnic areas are. If you need the toilet you will need to go during your break times.

If you are planning to get something from the canteen get make sure you bring money with you or you can bring your own food and eat these in the canteen or picnic area. If you qualify for free school meals you will be able you will be able to collect your dinner ticket at the entrance to the canteen at lunch time Please remember that if you are bringing in your own food we do not allow fizzy or energy drinks at school.

FINISHING THE DAY

After period 5 at 3.10 it will be home time. You will be dismissed from your classroom and allowed to go straight home. To leave the school you will need to go through the main gates where you came in. At the gates will be school buses which you can get or if you need other buses you can walk into Acocks Green Village.

If you are being picked from school we strongly advise that you meet them in a prearranged place away from the main school gate as this area can become very crowded and can be dangerous for students if there are too many cars in the area.

TOP TIP:

Make sure that you bring in a water bottle with you to keep you hydrated throughout the day as well as healthy snakes. We do not allow students to bring fizzy or energy drinks into school or excessive amounts of junk food. Make healthy choices!

TOP TIP:

Get there bright and early and use ths oppertunity to meet some new people. Everyone will be just as nervous and excited as you so it makes this a great time to get talking to other students!

How will I know where I am going?

TOP TIP:

Use your first few days to make the very best impression you can on your new teachers. Try extra hard in lessons and go the extra mile with homework. This can help you get notice for all the right reasons!
