What do they need to know?

In order to do well in their exams, your child needs to be clear about what it is they need to know. This is simple process, just follow our simple step by step guide.

STEP 1 - GET YOUR LIST

Get the exam specification or their subject's PIXL sheet. This will give you a list of all the things that could come up in the exam.

STEP 2 - RATE CODE EACH TOPIC

Once you have this, use the traffic light system to rate each topic with your child to give yourself a clear idea of what they already know, but more importantly, what they need to know. Code each topic. Each code means:

GREEN = 'I know this. I am confident that I could attempt to answer a question on this if it came up in the exam'

AMBER = 'I need a little reminding. I am not too confident that I could answer questions on this in the exam'

RED = 'I don't know this at all. I would not be able to attempt answer a question on this topic at all'

STEP 3 - CREATE BESPOKE REVISION LISTS

List all of the topics in the amber and red sections. The amber ones need a little more revision until they become green but the red will need a little more work. Don't worry, they will cover these topics at some point in their lessons but if they are worried that they may have missed it they should go and talk to their teacher who will go though the topic with them.

STEP 4 - UPDATE YOUR AUDIT... AGAIN... AND AGAIN...

Knowledge will develop the more your child revises and the more topics that are covered in class. Every month or so, update the audit by doing steps 2 and 3. What you will see is more and more topics in the green which will prove that your child's revision is working!

To find your exam specifications, find out what exam board your subject uses, go to their website and search for your topic. Find the course specification to find out all of the topics that could come up in your exam.
